Cyber security “incident” hits IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is currently probing a “cyber incident” that led to the unauthorized access of 11 of its email accounts.

On February 16th, the IMF detected unauthorized access, prompting an investigation with help from external cybersecurity professionals to assess and address the breach. According to the IMF, measures to rectify the situation were swiftly implemented.

Following the investigation, the security of the 11 affected email accounts was restored. “We have no indication of further compromise beyond these email accounts at this point in time,” stated the IMF.

The inquiry into the cybersecurity breach remains active. The IMF emphasized its commitment to cybersecurity, acknowledging that, despite preventive efforts, digital intrusions are a persistent threat. “The IMF takes the prevention of, and defense against, cyber incidents very seriously and, like all organizations, operates under the assumption that cyber incidents will unfortunately occur,” the organization conveyed.
