OpenAI has teamed up with the nonprofit organization Common Sense Media to promote the use of AI in a responsible manner among families. This collaboration was announced during the Common Sense Summit for America’s Kids and Families, with leaders from both entities presenting the initiative.
The partnership between OpenAI and Common Sense is designed to enable parents, educators, and teenagers to navigate AI technologies in a safe and productive way.
One of the first initiatives under this collaboration will be the creation of AI usage guidelines and educational resources, which will be customized for various age demographics. Moreover, Common Sense will contribute its expertise by selecting a range of kid-friendly AI tools for inclusion in OpenAI’s newly launched GPT Store.
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting the enhanced safety measures it will bring. “Our partnership with Common Sense will amplify our efforts to ensure that families and teenagers can engage with our tools confidently, leveraging the vast benefits AI has to offer,” he stated.
Echoing this sentiment, James P. Steyer, the founder of Common Sense, committed to harnessing AI for positive family and teen outcomes. He remarked, “By joining forces with OpenAI, we aim to ensure AI’s influence is beneficial across the board.”
Steyer also emphasized the importance of their guidance and advice in fostering the responsible use of conversational AI platforms such as ChatGPT, aiming to mitigate any potential negative consequences stemming from AI’s rapid development.
This partnership is particularly timely, given the significant attention ChatGPT has attracted since its launch in November 2022. With Common Sense contributing its child development expertise, the alliance seeks to proactively craft an AI landscape that safeguards and enriches the lives of children.
