Simon Hayes has been appointed as the new chief executive of Sport England, replacing Tim Hollingsworth later this year.
Hayes, currently the CEO of HM Land Registry, will step into his new role in September. His appointment follows Hollingsworth’s decision to step down after seven years of leadership, announced in February.
Hayes brings a strong background in public sector leadership and modernisation. At HM Land Registry, he rebuilt the organisation after years of underinvestment, transforming it into a modern, digital and customer-focused service.
Before joining Land Registry, Hayes held senior roles across various public bodies. These included the police, criminal justice and immigration sectors.
He previously served as chief of staff at the UK Border Agency, and held leadership roles in UK Visas and Immigration.
Hayes was also the first UK Border Agency regional director for the Americas, spending time in the United States.
Sport England chair Chris Boardman said Hayes was selected for his proven ability to lead complex public sector organisations through transformation.
He added that Hayes’ success in delivering public value and driving efficiency made him a stand-out candidate.
Boardman also paid tribute to outgoing CEO Tim Hollingsworth, noting his leadership through the pandemic and during the launch of the “Uniting the Movement” strategy.
Hollingsworth helped steer the organisation through some of the most challenging periods in its history, Boardman said.
Sports Minister Stephanie Peacock welcomed Hayes’ appointment. She said: “Simon Hayes has a strong track record of delivering impact in the public sector.”
“His wealth of experience will ensure that Sport England can continue its vital work under strong leadership,” she added.
Peacock highlighted the role of Sport England in supporting the NHS and promoting health, especially among under-represented groups.
Hayes expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, saying: “I’m incredibly excited to lead Sport England and spread the message about the rewards of physical activity.”
“I believe passionately that the benefits of sports and activity should be accessible to everyone regardless of their postcode, background or bank balance,” he said.
“Sport England’s mission has never been more relevant to our national priorities as we strive to create a healthier and happier nation.”
Hayes is a regular player of padel and five-a-side football. He is expected to bring fresh energy to the organisation as it continues its mission to increase activity levels nationwide.
