iconsys doubles down on functional safety with specialist hires and new assessment service

Telford-based control and automation expert iconsys is expanding its functional safety team to help UK manufacturers tackle the £1.4 billion annual cost of workplace injuries. The company has recruited several consultants and engineers trained to ISO 13849, IEC 61511 and TUV 4414/11 standards, and is launching a new end-to-end safety assessment service.

Key highlights:

  • Consultative safety audits: An initial, site-wide machinery review will identify hazards and compliance gaps.
  • Five-step functional safety process: From risk analysis through engineering design to on-site validation using tools such as SISTEMA.
  • Sector coverage: Automotive, aerospace & defence, FMCG, marine & ports, construction materials, pulp & paper, transport infrastructure and energy transition.
  • Standards expertise: ISO 13849 for machinery, IEC 61511 for process industries, and TUV-certified engineers.

“When you’re already dealing with day-to-day pressures, the issue of functional safety can seem overwhelming and that’s where we can make a significant difference,” said Leandro Gasparini, Head of Services at iconsys. “There is an element of meeting compliance and regulations, but getting this side of your business right can also unlock a more productive work environment and operational efficiencies by upgrading obsolete machinery that can be dangerous to the workforce.”

Gasparini added that early intervention avoids costly downtime and design errors:

“Our consultants will start conversations with companies that don’t know where to turn—firms may not have qualified people in-house or may need independent advice. Our team of TUV-trained safety engineers then support remediation requirements where safety issues are identified during the audit. The sooner we can start, the quicker we can begin making a positive impact.”

Alongside functional safety, iconsys’ services division now offers formalised packages in digitalisation, cybersecurity, sustainability, energy management and site assessments—covering the full lifecycle of industrial assets.

“It’s complete peace of mind,” Gasparini concluded. “By the end of the safety service, we know that a proactive approach to functional safety delivers operational improvements and cost savings, including reduced downtime, energy-efficient technology adoption and compliance with the latest legislation.”

iconsys is recruiting to grow its workforce to 115 engineers and consultants in the next year, bolstering capacity at its smart manufacturing campus in Telford to meet rising demand in decarbonisation, safety and automation. For more information, visit www.iconsys.co.uk.
